Arenga engleri

This palm will eventually cover a 10 ft. X 10 ft. space in the landscape. Its black, fiber-covered multiple trunks are quite attractive.


Common Name: Dwarf Sugar Palm
Origin: Taiwan
Typical Height: 10 ft.
Stem: Multiple and covered with dark fibers. Individual trunks, which die after flowering, are replaced by others
Leaf: Long and broad pinnate leaf, dark green above and silvery below, the leaflets having notched tips
Fruit: Hanging in attractive bunches, they are about ½ in. in diameter and ripen through green, yellow and orange to red when ripe
Cultivation: Not widely cultivated. OUTDOORS – Probably one of the most cold-hardy Arengas, will withstand a light frost. INDOORS – Has not been tested, but should do well with good light and moderate watering. Hardiness Zones 9 - 11.
